Where it starts
Every pair begins with a prescription
A frame is only as good as the lenses in it, and lenses are ground to a measurement rather than a guess. If your last test was more than two years ago, start there — it takes about forty minutes and you can choose frames the same visit.
The lenses
High-end lenses, made to your prescription
The lens does the work. These are the options worth knowing about before you choose a frame, because some of them change which frames will suit you.
- Single vision, bifocal and varifocal
- One prescription, two, or a smooth progression between them. Varifocals need a taller lens, which rules some very shallow frames out — worth knowing before you fall for one.
- Thinned lenses for stronger prescriptions
- A high prescription in a standard lens is thick at the edge and heavy on the nose. High-index material brings the thickness and the weight down without changing the correction.
- Anti-reflective and scratch-resistant coatings
- Cuts the reflections that sit between your eyes and whoever is looking at you, and makes night driving easier. The hard coat is what keeps the lens clear after a year in a pocket.
- Photochromic and tinted
- Lenses that darken in sunlight and clear indoors, for anyone who would rather not carry two pairs. Fixed tints and polarised lenses for driving are made up as well.
- Blue-light filters
- Available, and worth being straight about: the evidence that they prevent damage is thin. Some people find them more comfortable on a long screen day, and that is a good enough reason to have one.
Contact lenses
Fitted, not just sold
Contact lenses sit on the surface of the eye, so they are fitted to its curvature and checked afterwards. We dispense daily, fortnightly and monthly soft lenses, and toric lenses for astigmatism.
- A fitting appointment, where the curvature of your eye is measured and trial lenses are tried on.
- Teaching you to insert, remove and store them — nobody is sent home to work it out alone.
- Daily, fortnightly and monthly soft lenses, and toric lenses if you have astigmatism.
- A follow-up to check the fit and the health of the eye before a full supply is dispensed.

What happens
From walking in to picking them up
Your eyes are tested
About forty minutes. You leave with a prescription whether or not you buy anything here.
You choose a frame
On your face, in the mirror, with someone who fits glasses for a living telling you the truth about them.
We measure and order
Pupillary distance and the height of your eye in the chosen frame, then the lenses are made up.
You collect and we adjust
The frame is bent to your face when you pick it up, and adjusted again any time afterwards, free.
